Made in NZ NZS 4503 By the industry, for the industry

NZS 4503 Compliance Software
Built in New Zealand

Tagr isn’t a generic overseas product bolted onto NZ regulations. It was built from scratch around NZS 4503:2005 — every clause reference, every inspection table, every service interval is in there because someone who knows the standard put it there.

We’re not an Australian company trying to make AS 1851 work for NZS 4503. We’re not an overseas SaaS business that learned about fire compliance from a Wikipedia page. Tagr was built by someone who works in the NZ fire industry — someone who knows the difference between a monthly inspection and a five-yearly service, and knows why pressure test tracking matters.

Paper Job Sheets and Spreadsheets
Are Costing Your Fire Service Business.

Every extinguisher, hose reel, and fire blanket you service must be inspected against the NZS 4503 checklist, with a signed record kept on file. Your customers rely on these records to satisfy their insurers’ requirements and meet their Health and Safety at Work Act obligations. Most fire service companies across New Zealand are still producing them on paper.

That means double-handling data back at the office, chasing illegible job sheets, manually creating PDF compliance reports for each customer, and no real visibility into which sites are coming due.

Tagr fixes this from the first job — cutting service scheduling and report admin and making sure you never miss a service due date again.

  • Paper job sheets that need transcribing at the office — double the work, double the errors.
  • Spreadsheets that don’t scale — no visibility, no alerts, no scheduling intelligence.
  • Manual PDF reports for every customer — hours of admin per week that should be zero.
  • No route planning — technicians criss-crossing the city instead of batching nearby sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NZS 4503:2005 compliance, fire equipment servicing in New Zealand, and how Tagr fits in.

What is NZS 4503:2005?
NZS 4503:2005 is the New Zealand Standard for Hand Operated Fire-fighting Equipment. It covers the selection, installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, and testing of portable fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets in New Zealand buildings.
How often do fire extinguishers need to be serviced in New Zealand?
Under NZS 4503:2005, portable fire extinguishers require monthly visual inspections, an annual service by a competent person, and a five-yearly extended service — which for most extinguisher types includes pressure testing and internal inspection. Hose reels and fire blankets follow similar monthly and annual schedules defined in Tables 7 and 8 of the standard.
What is a Record of Equipment?
NZS 4503:2005 requires every site to keep a written Record of Equipment — a register of every extinguisher, hose reel, and fire blanket installed, including location, type, size, serial number, manufacture and install dates, and servicing standard. Tagr generates this document automatically from your site data, so you and your customer always have a current, compliant record on file.
Who is required to service fire extinguishers to NZS 4503?
Portable fire extinguishers are not a Specified System under the Building Act and sit outside the Building Warrant of Fitness regime. However, servicing to NZS 4503:2005 is almost universally required by commercial property insurers as a condition of cover, and supports employers’ duty to provide and maintain a safe workplace under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Most commercial leases also require tenants to maintain fire-fighting equipment to recognised standards. In practice, this makes NZS 4503 servicing essential for virtually every commercial building in New Zealand.
Why do commercial properties need fire extinguisher servicing if it isn’t legally required?
While NZS 4503:2005 is a standard rather than legislation, the commercial reality is that servicing is non-negotiable. Insurers require it — without evidence of regular NZS 4503 servicing, commercial property and business interruption claims can be declined. The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires PCBUs to maintain a safe workplace, including functional fire-fighting equipment. Most commercial leases require tenants to keep equipment maintained to a recognised standard. Together, these drivers make NZS 4503 servicing effectively mandatory for any building a business operates from.
What’s the difference between monthly, annual, and five-yearly servicing?
Monthly inspections are quick visual checks to confirm the extinguisher is present, accessible, undamaged, and in the correct pressure range. Annual service is a more thorough check including weighing, anti-tamper inspection, and documentation. Five-yearly service involves pressure testing, internal inspection, and discharge/refill for most extinguisher types — a significantly more involved workshop procedure. Tagr drives the correct checklist for whichever service level a technician is performing.
Does Tagr work offline in the field?
Yes. Technicians can complete a full NZS 4503 service in basements, plant rooms, or anywhere with no mobile signal. Checklist progress, defect notes, and photos are saved locally on the device and sync automatically the moment connection is restored — no lost work, no re-entry.
Can Tagr replace paper fire extinguisher service job sheets entirely?
Yes. Tagr produces two documents per completed service automatically — a NZS 4503 Compliance Report for the customer’s records and their insurer, and an itemised Job Sheet for your invoicing. Both are generated as professional PDFs the moment a technician finalises the service, eliminating the paper-to-office transcription step entirely.
Is Tagr suitable for a single-technician fire equipment business?
Yes. Tagr’s standard price is $149 NZD per month for unlimited sites and unlimited technicians. Founding subscriptions are currently available for $99 NZD per month for a limited time, with no per-user fees, no tiered plans, and no site limits to grow out of.
How does the QR code labelling work?
Every piece of equipment in Tagr gets a unique QR code. Print the full label sheet for a site in one click and attach them to each extinguisher, hose reel, or fire blanket. Scan an equipment QR in the app and you get an instant info card, location, last service date, next due, and pressure test status. From there, tap Start Service to jump straight into the workflow for that unit’s site. There’s also a site-level QR you can print and display in a plant room or on a noticeboard. Technicians scan it on arrival and land directly on the Start Service screen, no menu navigation, no searching for the right site.
